University of Massachusetts at Amherst granted Chapter Status

ne of today's leading centers of public higher education in the Northeast, the University of Massachusetts Amherst has achieved a growing reputation for excellence in an increasing number of disciplines, for the breadth of its academic offerings, and for the expansion of its historic roles in education, research, and public service. External funding for the University comes from a variety of sources, including the state, the federal government, private industry, and private individuals and foundations.

U.Mass Amherst Charters: Kappa Phi Lambda established its first colony in Massachusetts at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on May 12, 2001. The six charters, Mary Moc Bounphasayson, My Linh Tiffani Le, Susan Lee, Henrielle Ann Tirol Manapat, Thuy An Thi Nguyen, and Sonn San, all came together and formed a group interested in founding another sorority on campus in order to provide young Asian woman with another choice other than what was offered. Kappa Phi Lambda turned out to be the ideal because it is a young organization in which the charters could be a part of building the history, and everything that Kappa Phi Lambda stands for seemed to meld into the standards that were already implemented in the group. Kappa Phi Lambda at UMass Amherst achieved full recognition from the university during their first semester on campus (Fall 2001) and achieved Mu Chapter Status in Summer 2003. As a chapter, the sisters of the Mu Chapter of Kappa Phi Lambda will continue to uphold the standards of the sorority as well as continuing to make a positive impact on the UMass Amherst Campus.
