Taking Steps with the Chinese-American Planning Council: November 05, 2006

On Saturday, July 15, 2006, the Chinese-American Planning Council, a non-profit organization and one of the largest providers of social services for Asian Americans in the United States, organized a walkathon event in hopes of raising funds to support and strengthen children and family services that were being impacted by budget cuts at all levels of government.

It was a day filled with performances, events and festivities. Important figures in the media and government came out to show their support for the Asian community. The daunting goal of raising $100,000 was at hand and it was the moment of truth. The sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda saw the importance of the cause and jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Over 50 sisters were present at the event from various chapters to support as walkers and to volunteer and assist with traffic control. Proudly to say, Kappa Phi Lambda had the greatest presence out of the Greek community that day. Since the event was based in NYC it was difficult for many sisters to make the trip out. However that didn’t stop schools from contributing to the cause. Kappa Phi Lambda helped to fundraise over $1300 to contribute to CPC in their efforts to improve children and family services. Over 2000 individuals from all over the tri-state came out that day. Needless to say the event was a great success!

The Chinese American Planning Council not only reached their fundraising goal of $100,000 but surpassed it by thousands of dollars. Though their financial goal was realized, there was a greater accomplishment that day. This event helped to heighten the awareness of the needs in the Chinese American and east side community in NYC and helped to bring individuals of all ages and backgrounds together as one voice.

It was a privilege and proud moment for the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda to be apart of such an event; to be able to give back to the community where many sisters reside. The legacy of the sorority for community service truly continues to live on bright and strong.
