Kappa Phi Lambda reaches out to the Marines in Iraq: Project Infinity

ith one of our very own sisters (Linda Tang aka Infinity, right) actively serving our country in Iraq, Kappa Phi Lambda decided to contribute what we can to the Marines who are fighting for our country’s future. Project Infinity was created as a national project in which each chapter/colony made and sent personalized care packages to Linda and her 9 Marines [LCPL Joseph J. Derrider, LCPL Jared P. Filosa, LCPL Katzutaka E. Hoshino, PFC Jacob A. Hall, LCPL David N. Larkin, PFC David K. Pennington, LCPL Timothy D. Stevens, LCPL William J. Talley and LCPL Michael J. Valentine] currently situated in Iraq. Through email contact, Linda was able to provide a list of essential items that the Marines desperately needed but lacked. Many of these items were as simple as hard candy, toilet paper, facial wipes, panty liner pads and travel size hygiene items just for every day use. Then there were items which were needed to fight the war on terror such as Ziploc bags [to keep the sand out], Q-tips and pipe cleaners [to clean out the rifles]. The Marines also really wanted the latest DVDs and MP3s so they can know what the latest hits were back home.

With this in mind, each chapter and colony of Kappa Phi Lambda collected different items on the list and created 10 individual care packages for each of the Marines. Many schools were very creative and sent items such as: current events book, magazines, plastic drawers and ice packs along with the items from the list. Northern Illinois University Colony set up a Project Infinity event in their school in which students donated items and decorated the care packages together. Each care package also included a personalized card in which sisters wrote special and encouraging messages to the Marines.

What made this project so worthwhile and rewarding was the fact that we were able to see the results of our hard work. Linda constantly sends us pictures of the Marines’ appreciation and gratitude. She describes how her Marines’ morale is higher because of the care packages and the sisters’ efforts. Kappa Phi Lambda is grateful that we were able to contribute to the Marines who are fighting for our country and will continuously reach out to the Marines in Iraq.
